Several BBs were also looking good. Exceptional
branching was noted on ‘Stylish Choice’ (Black 2017). Petite
and very clean, its blue-purple bitone plicata blooms make
this an excellent Border Bearded iris. It also reblooms in
Oregon. Another reblooming border bearded seen was
‘Keep Going’ (Black 2017). Its excellent branching and high
bud count in spring assure that you will look forward to
 seeing it twice a year.
The Arilbreds were at peak and were a big highlight in
the garden. Thomas Johnson’s 2018 AB Median, ‘Pounce’
with its large rust colored signal patch was eye-catching.
‘Perry Dyer’ (Black 2017) was very striking, the signal patch
has sharp rays of color which extend from the signal patch.
This iris is a good grower and well-named for a fine AIS
supporter and hybridizer. ‘Artful Accent’ (Black 2018, OGB)
was also very striking and was growing well in the garden.
As the bloom progresses, the falls lighten to show the
signal patch to even better advantage.
After lunch, the group moved on to Schreiner’s Iris
Gardens and their spectacular display beds. Not only
irises, but lupines and shrubs and other perennials make
a visit to the grounds something that should be on every
iris lover’s bucket list. Of note, an excellent planting of
the distinctive bitone ‘Table For Two’ (Schreiner 2016, TB)
provided top notch stalks with tons of bloom. So much so,
that this iris was voted the Best-In-Region iris for the tour.

Kevin Vaughn seedling T18-1 (MTB tetraploid),
 winner of Best Seedling iris
 , kevin vaughn
Its tawny greenish standards over red-black falls with a
white blaze set it apart from others.
Kevin Vaughn pointed out another colorful introduction
from Larry Lauer’s red amoena program, ‘Good Idea’ (2017,
TB), and it also produced an excellent clump at Schreiners.
Tour guests were able to visit Larry Lauer’s garden on their
own, the day before and after the tour. There it could be
seen that Larry is making great progress with seedlings
from ‘Good Idea’. Also on the optional tour garden, Kevin
Vaughn had a range of irises in bloom. His seedling T18-1
was recognized as Best Seedling of the tour.
The day finished with a program presented by Barry
Blyth. Barry shared slides that showed how he began his
over 50 years' work for a pink amoena. He also showed
the plicatas that have popped up from that line. Watching
his progress with seedlings over the years really increases
your appreciation for all of the hard work that goes into
creating and improving a pattern. Barry recently sold the
farm, and his introductions are now being offered through
 Mid-America Garden.
We were lucky to have visitors from near and far.
Tours are always a great time to see friends and enjoy the
gardens. The Oregon Trails Iris Society was happy to host
for Region 13 and thank the TBIS for joining us and making
 it a special event.
