 IRIS TOUR 2018
BY ROBIN SHADLOW, OREGON Rphotos by robin shadlow unless noted
egion 13 got together with the Tall Bearded Iris
Society to hold its Regional tour in Salem, OR this May. We
had quite a number of guests, including people from New
Zealand, Australia and Michigan. Bloom was at the early
stages of Tall Bearded bloom, with plenty of SDB, IB, MTB,
BB and Arilbred bloom to enjoy.
Thomas Johnson gave judges' training. He offered great
insights, one which I hadn’t considered before. He pointed
out that some irises produce multiple stalks from one
rhizome. If a rhizome is producing two stalks with six buds
each and has sequencing such that the variety is in bloom
for two weeks, we might consider that the bud count
meets the requirements in a different way. This does give
me another dimension to consider when evaluating irises.
Looking to see if the plant produces multiple stalks from
one rhizome that are placed far enough apart to display
the flowers nicely would be a factor worth considering on
 any variety.
The tour began at the garden of Lynda and Roger
Miller (Miller’s Manor). Lynda specializes in miniature Tall
Bearded irises and had many interesting seedlings. She is
getting wonderful raspberry colors in her MTBs and also
had an intermediate bearded (IB) seedling with a most
 unusual pattern.
