With the AIS National Convention being held
in New Orleans in April this spring with its emphasis
on Louisiana irises, the Tall Bearded Iris Society (TBIS)
accepted an invitation to join Region 13’s Spring Convention
in Salem, Oregon in May. This article is about
some of what we saw there in the gardens.
The convention was held Mother’s Day weekend
May 11–13, and was hosted by the Oregon Trails Iris
Society (OTIS).
I arrived on Thursday to clouds and rain and
I thought this is not a good sign. But by the time
I drove from the airport to the hotel the rain
had stopped and the skies had brightened. The
weatherman stated that for the first time in eight
years, he was predicting no rain for a week. Let the
fun begin.
On Friday morning, a group of TBIS folks had
some free time and drove to the Thomas Johnson's
