There were 115 iris shows reported in the U. S. and
Canada between April 7 and June 23. There was one
fall show in Milledgeville, Georgia in November. Medians
were picked by the judges as Best Specimen in
17 shows compared to 16 in 2017. In the Youth category,
there were three additional medians selected.
Youth involvement was good for the second year in
 a row.
Overall, adult median winners were evenly divided
with five IBs and five MTBs, followed by four
SDBs, two BBs and one AB Median.
The oldest adult median winner was ‘Tom Tit’
(Bliss 1919, MTB) displayed in East Greenberg, NY by
Virginia Dorwaldt. This dark blue-violet (B1D) diploid
iris from England was originally registered as a
TB, but later reclassified as MTB following the 1957
 establishment of the Median classes.
The newest median to be awarded best specimen
in show was ‘Tagline’ (Ghio 2018, BB) displayed by
its hybridizer in Santa Cruz, CA. Joe’s 2018 catalog
description states “The upright standards are a lush
creamy gold, lighter at petal edges. The falls are
white with light yellow at the shoulders. The precise
violet mulberry band enhances the bubble ruffled
petals. Great in the garden and show bench.” Hyperbole
 or premonition? Time will tell.
