 NEWS FROM AUSTRALIA
(Corrected reprint Spring 2019 IRISES; All cultivars were
previously listed as TBs when in fact some were LAs.)
We extend our congratulations to Michael
Barnes, who is assuming the role of president of the
Australian Iris Society. Good luck, Michael!
We have just received the results of the last two
Australian Dykes Medal competitions. The awards
are a tribute to the efforts of the great hybridizer
Graeme Grosvenor and include his 20th Dykes
 Medal win this year.

International Editor’s Note: I delayed this report
because I wanted to check if it was an error that
both ‘Sense and Sensibility’ and ‘Mansfield Park’ are
listed in the results for both 2017 and 2018. Michael
Barnes kindly explained: “Each cultivar is grown in
each of the Dykes Medal trial gardens for four years,
being judged in the second, third and fourth springs.
They are removed after their fourth spring, or if they
 win.”

The SPCNI will also be going on a mini-adventure/
trek to the Rancho Santa Ana Botanic Garden in
Claremont, California. We’ll be going on April 14–
Sunday, meeting at the entrance. The garden is a
California native botanic garden and will be beautiful
in spring, but it also has an extensive collection
of Pacific Coast irises that were collected, grown,
crossed, etc., by Dr. Lee Lenz. While he collected
many of our native species, his I. munzii collection
and hybrids are what I find most interesting. Dr. Lenz
started at the garden in 1948 and over his tenure at the
garden has made many contributions to our California
native and our pacific coast irises. His I. munzii ‘Sierra
Sapphire’ is one of his many big award winners but
not the only one and is the distant relative of many
modern PCIs. For more info, visit: matilijanursery.com/
